Unpacked: How do they do that?

Thursday 19th April, 2018

ACE Dance and Music | 11:00 - 17:00

Unpacked is Flatpack’s successful creative industries strand, focussing on the art of making, fettling and creating. Each year we dedicate a full day to exploring the backstories of the artists and filmmakers exhibiting at the festival.

This year’s bumper day features a plethora of demonstrations, workshops, and talks offering a glimpse into the working processes sitting at the very heart of the programme. Not just for people who work in the arts, this day is completely inclusive, and designed for anyone interested in film, animation, art, or who simply wants to be inspired, and hear from and meet interesting artists working across various mediums.

On the bill are BAFTA-winner and Oscar-nominee British animator Daisy Jacobs who is joined by Christopher Wilder co-director of her most recent film The Full Story, discussing their unique dimension-bending approach to making animation. Austrian transmedia artist and architect Anna Vasof’s imaginative video experiments and installations combine humour and craft, while Dutch visual artist Johan Rijpma has been making waves with his short films and last year won Vimeo’s coveted ‘Best Short of the Year Award’. Musician, sound artist and musical instrument designer Sam Underwood will be showing off some of his hand-made instruments, and cut-out collective Paper Cinema will be demonstrating their unique approach to live animated theatre.

11:00 - 11:35

Anna Vasof

Based in Austria, transmedia artist, architect, inventor, engineer, and animator Anna Vasof’s imaginative installations and video experiments are brilliant in so many ways; one can quite easily get lost in her YouTube and Vimeo channels. Her installation ‘Self-Portrait’ will be on show from Thursday 19 - Sunday 22 April, and her short film When Time Moves Faster will screen in competition.

11:40 - 12:10
